Leslie Hackman Speaks Out About Father Gene and Stepmother Betsy’s Tragic Deaths
Leslie Hackman has broken her silence following the shocking deaths of her father, legendary actor Gene Hackman, and his wife Betsy Arakawa at their Santa Fe home. The couple was discovered by a neighbor after they had passed away in separate rooms, with one of their dogs also found deceased.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Leslie, 58, revealed that despite being 95, her father had maintained remarkable vitality. “He was very active, doing Pilates and yoga regularly,” she shared. While authorities haven’t confirmed the cause of death, Leslie suggested a carbon monoxide leak might have been responsible.

The family is still coming to terms with the sudden loss. Living in California, Leslie noted that communication with her father had been limited recently, though everything had seemed normal before the tragedy. She and her sister Elizabeth Jean are awaiting further information from law enforcement about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Gene’s nephew Tim Hackman also expressed his grief, learning of the deaths through Leslie. He credited Betsy, who was 64, with extending Gene’s longevity, stating, “I truly believe he made it as long as he did because of her.”
The bodies had remained undiscovered for at least a day according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. Gene, who retired from acting in 2004, had been living quietly in New Mexico with Betsy, his wife of over three decades whom he married in 1991
